The recent severe drought gripping Europe has led to a critical situation for Romania's sole nuclear plant, the Cernavoda plant, which has been forced to shut down due to record-low water levels in the Danube River. This plant, which usually generates a fifth of the country's electricity, is now facing a complete shutdown, raising concerns about energy supply and the country's reliance on nuclear power.
The Romanian government had been attempting to prevent this outcome by allocating over 2 million euros to divert the Danube's flow, including measures like blowing up a large rock and sinking barges filled with rocks. However, these efforts proved insufficient, and the plant's director, Romeo Urjan, expects operations to remain paused for at least 10 days.
This situation is not unique to Romania. Neighboring Hungary, which also relies on the Danube for cooling its nuclear plant in Paks, has been partially shutting down its plant since late last month. Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced plans to construct a submerged wall or weir to control water flows near the plant, and two 80-meter barges are being stationed at Paks to potentially raise the water level.
The low water levels in the Danube have far-reaching consequences, impacting shipping and causing disruptions along the river's 2,850-kilometer route from western Germany to the Black Sea.
